Neutral CGM as damped Ly ? absorbers at high redshift

چکیده

Recent searches for the hosts of high-redshift ($z \sim 4$) damped Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) have detected bright galaxies at distances tens kpc from DLA. Using FIRE-2 cosmological zoom simulations, we argue that these relatively large are due to a predominantly cool and neutral inner circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding galaxies. The CGM is because short cooling time hot gas in $\lesssim10^{12}$ Msun halos, which implies accretion feedback energy radiated quickly, while it high volume densities column redshift shield photoionization. Our analysis predicts DLA covering factors ($\gtrsim50\%$) out impact parameters $\sim0.3((1 + z)/5)^{3/2}\ R_{\rm vir}$ central $z > 1$, equivalent physical distance $\sim 21 M_{12}^{1/3} ((1 z)/5)^{1/2}$ ($R_{\rm $M_{12}$ halo virial radius mass units $10^{12}$ Msun, respectively). This 4$ may be comparable unity 10$ times larger than stellar half-mass radii. A early universe suggests its metallicity can directly constrained by absorption surveys, without resorting ionization corrections as required ionized CGM.

Ly α absorbers at high redshift — large disks or galactic building blocks ?

We investigate the nature of the physical structures giving rise to damped Lyα absorption systems (DLAS) at high redshift. In particular, we examine the suggestion that rapidly rotating large disks are the only viable explanation for the characteristic observed asymmetric profiles of low ionization absorption lines. Using hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation in a cosmological context we...

Associated Hi in Absorbers at High Redshift

WSRT observations have provided a first inventory of the incidence of H i 21 cm line absorption associated with AGN at redshifts up to z=1.0. There is a large range in line depths, from τ = 0.44 to τ ≤ 0.001, and a substantial variety of line profiles, from Gaussians of less than ten km s to more typically a few hundred km s, as well as irregular and multi-peaked absorption, sometimes spanning ...

Where Is the Molecular Hydrogen in Damped Ly Α Absorbers?

We show in this paper why molecular millimeter absorption line searches in DLAs have been unsuccessful. We use CO emission line maps of local galaxies to derive the H2 column density distribution function f(NH2) at z = 0. We show that it forms a natural extension to f(NHI): the H2 distribution exceeds f(NHI) at NH ≈ 10 cm and exhibits a power law drop-off with slope ∼ −2.5. Approximately 97% of...

The nature of intermediate-redshift damped Lyα absorbers

We present HST/WFPC2 high-spatial resolution images in the R and B bands of the close environment of the sightlines to seven quasars which spectra show either a damped Lyα absorption line, 21 cm absorption, or a very strong Mg ii/Fe ii absorption system at intermediate redshifts (0.4 ≤ z ≤ 1). Objects down to about 0.3′′, or 2.0 kpc at z = 0.6 (H0 = 50 kms s−1 Mpc−1, q0 = 0), and to a limiting ...

The nature of N v absorbers at high redshift ⋆

We present a study of N v absorption systems at 1.5 z 2.5 in the spectra of 19 QSOs, based on data obtained with the VLT/UVES instrument. Our analysis includes both the absorbers arising from the intergalactic medium, as well as systems in the vicinity of the background quasar. We construct detailed photoionization models to study the physical conditions and abundances in the absorbers and to c...
